The view from section 230

septower.jpgAnother entertaining game at the Rogers Centre tonight as the Jays keep rolling in the role of spoilers downing the Rays 6-4 for their 6th straight win.

Would have loved more of this kind of play earlier in the season, but hey, a win is a win so I shouldn’t complain,

Sat in section 230 tonight and some random thoughts:

– who was in charge of the roof tonight? It was threatening rain all evening so the roof was closed at game time.  Some genius decides to open the roof long enough for rain to fall in, then they have to close it again while the game is going on.

Didn’t matter much to me since I was underneath the overhang of the private boxes, but I’m sure the players must have been annoyed especially since the wind could have temporarily aided fly balls.

Other thoughts:

– why the boos for Eric Hinske? Sure, he underachieved in Toronto, but that’s old history. I’m happy for the guy now… he has decent numbers and a good shot at the playoffs this year

– was watching the out of town scoreboard all evening – Phils beats the Mets tonight at Shea. Another choke in the making?

– nice to see Joe Carter at the game tonight… decent ovation from the fans too

sepjoe.jpg

– have loved the throwback unis all season long, especially using the best logo the team has ever had.  I’m sick of the current black 3rd jerseys and the lack of “Blue” in front of Jays

Congrats to Doc on another great outing

Go Rays Go!  I’m hoping for a Rays-Cubs World Series

Shameless Promotion!

No, I am not an employee of MLB, but I can’t resist saying this:

Thank You MLB.TV!!!

Red Sox-Yanks, Mets-Phillies, Brewers-Cards, and my Blue Jays in Tampa with Doc Halladay pitching.

All big games with playoff race implications and I’ll be watching all 4 of them at once tonight….. does life get any better than this?

(Well, besides the playoffs of course!)

Down on the farm

syra.jpg

I returned this evening from a 5 day vacation in New York State. One of the destinations I visited was Syracuse, NY, home of the Blue Jays Triple A affiliate Syracuse Chiefs.

Enjoyed a front row view of the action as the visiting Buffalo Bisons defeated the Chiefs 6-3.

Players of note in the game:

Buffalo: Travis Hafner, Morgan Ensberg, Tony Graffanino

Syracuse: Curtis Thigpen, Russ Adams, John Parrish (who was called up to Toronto the next day)

This was only the 3rd minor league game I’d ever seen.

My 1st was at Olympic Stadium in Montreal in the 80’s as the Expos AA team played a regular season game there,  and my 2nd was in Las Vegas a couple of years ago.

I have more pictures from the Syracuse game at my main site:

A.J. Kkkkkkkkkkkkk-o’s Yanks

aug19b.jpg

Had the pleasure of taking in tonight’s game from section 231 and have to say it was one of the best I’ve seen in person this season.

A.J. Burnett was spectacular, pitching 8 innings and recording 13 strikeouts as the Jays squeaked out a 2-1 win. For the longest time it looked like his pitching performance would be wasted as Jay hitters were baffled by Darrel Rasner. However, a timely home run by Adam Lind in the 7th, and a dropped fly ball by Johnny Damon in the 8th (his 2nd of the game) gave Toronto the only runs they would need.

With a win tomorrow, the Jays can tie the Yanks for 3rd place, which is their only realistic goal for the season. Every once in awhile there is talk in the media and by fans that a winning streak will put the Jays back in the wild card hunt, but I’m not buying that.  I really don’t see Tampa Bay or Boston faltering now.

By the way….. what’s missing from the picture below????

aug19a.jpgAnswer:   KKKKKKKKKKKKK’s

It’s unbelievable that the Rogers Centre scoreboards (or fans) don’t post k’s on a regular basis.   Occasionally the team does a 7-strikeout promotion tied to a Pizza giveaway., but those are only temporarily displayed.  Note to Rogers Centre staff:  how about having a permanent K scoreboard on the facade around the windows restaurant??? Almost every MLB stadium has K postings.   And while I’m on a rant, I can’t believe our ” ceremonial opening pitch” is always thrown to the mascot, and not from the mound. Jeez, have a real player catch the ball and let the honoured guest throw from the mound. All the other parks do it right, and it’s the little things like this that make us look bush league.

Rant over  (for now)
